Mark's Basilica
Section dedicated to St. Mark's Piazza and its preservation
Piazza San Marco (or, better, the Piazza par excellence), has always
been considered the core of the city life; with the Basilica and the Palace
it was the religious, political and social heart of Venice.
Besides illustrating architectural and artistic evolution of Venice, this
site offers the lively image of a place which used to be not only the
Venetian's daily meeting point, but also the centre for state and civil
occasions, religious and social celebrations and entertainment.
This extremely precious monument is not immune to the ravages of time,
nor to the subtle and threatening assault of high waters, which often
flood even the Basilica. For this reason, we dedicate part of this site
to the preservation works implemented to maintain the precious masterworks
left to us by human progress through history.
